Owners made to pay up for commercial ventures
MUNICIPAL COMMISSIONER Badal Chatterjee today carried out a surprise raid on the city’s prominent coaching institutes in Kakadeo.
These coaching institutes were holding classes in residential houses, without seeking prior permission from the Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC). Deputy municipal commissioner LC Maurya, revenue inspectors and officials of the engineering department were present during the raid.
The team first raided the Anish Srivastav coaching centre. The owner of the building was paying Rs 46,216 as house tax.
On instructions of the municipal commissioner, the engineering department of the KMC carried out an on-the-spot-measurement of the coaching institute and levied commercial tax of Rs 1,49,216 on the building. After initial dithering, the building owner handed over a cheque to municipal commissioner.
The second raid was carried out at the coaching institute of Ashish Bishnoi, which was paying an annual residential house tax of Rs 30,492.
After assessment, the KMC imposed an annual commercial tax of Rs 1,24,918, which was duly paid by the building owner.
Then the team raided the coaching institute of Pankaj Agarwal-Nirmal Singh chemistry classes. It was being run on a rented building. After the assessment by the engineering department, Rs 65,000 was levied as commercial tax on the building.
Three building owners had been paying Rs 3,000 as house tax till date. During the raid, only a female owner of the building was present. On her request, the KMC squad served a notice of Rs 65,000 to her.

{{/usCountry}}During the raid on coaching institutes, user charges of Rs 5900 were also realised from traders who had encroached on pavements. Those fined included Cool Cat, Ravi Enterprises and others.
The municipal commissioner also issued a strict warning to all coaching institutes, hostels and cycle stands to pay user charges. He also asked traders to clear pavements in front of their shops or face action.
Chatterjee also informed that orders for repair of roads of coaching hubs had been issued and work would start soon. The Municipal Commissioner issued an appeal to traders to remove all encroachments for the speedy progress of the work.
