The 135-km Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway project, which was to be thrown open to the public in 2009, to ease congested roads in Delhi, continues to linger on till date.
Moreover, the Haryana government has extended the partial opening of the 53-km stretch between Manesar and Palwal slated for May 31, 2011, by three more months.
According to the original detailed project report (DPR), in 2009, over 7,000 trucks, 60,000 cars and 700 buses were to use the Expressway on daily basis. The number of vehicles might have increased by now.
Even two aerial surveys conducted by chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda could not speed up the work.
This project, also known as Western Peripheral Expressway, was conceived in 2005 by the state government. As per the requirements of NCR planning board, it was designed to form a ring around Delhi by connecting with the Eastern Peripheral Expressway in Uttar Pradesh. The project was awarded to KMPEL in 2006.
Rajiv Arora, managing director, Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC) said, “Besides certain issues related to clearances from the Central government, there were issues like unrest in Libya where KMPEL has many projects. I think that trouble is now over.”
However, KMPEL spokesperson said, "We are confident of completing the project in three months' time, after the Chief Minister directed his officials to expedite work on May 19, 2011."
