THE BHARTIYA Janshakti (BJ) has questioned the proposed mass marriage arranged by the State Government on January 14 (Makar Sankranti), saying that such ceremonies during ‘malmas’ were considered inauspicious by Hindus.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is scheduled to attend the ceremony in the City on January 14. BJ leaders Rajesh Beedkar and Rajesh Kasoriya told reporters here on Thursday that on one hand the Bharatiya Janata Party Government poses as the champion of the Hindu cause and on the other ignores the rules ordained by the scriptures. No auspicious ceremony is held during the ‘malmas’.
Beedkar alleged that the programme had been arranged to suit the convenience of the Chief Minister and the local leaders had linked it to his arrival in the City on that date to attend Sri Ram Katha at Quila Maidan. The mass marriage ceremony will see 151 couples tying the knot. He pointed out that most of the registered couples belong to Muslim and economically poor backgrounds.

Beedkar warned that if the government does not eschew the plan, marriage organiser Zila Panchayat Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ashutosh Awasthi would be held responsible and demonstrations would be held outside his residence where a ‘panchang’ (holy calendar) will be gifted to him.
