SLUICE GATES of all dams in and around Bhopal including Kolar Dam were opened today following heavy rains during the past 24 hours. Gates of Kolar Dam were opened after a gap of seven years.
Sluice gates of Bhadbhada, Kerwa, Kaliasot dams were also opened today following heavy rains. Except Kolar, all these dams had already attained full-tank level during the rains on August 13-14.
Kolar Dam which caters to the drinking water needs of about 65 per cent of the City population attained full tank level of 462.20 meters today after a gap of seven years.
One sluice gate was opened in 1999, but today, four out of eight sluice gates were opened at 6.15 pm providing outlet to additional water. The gates were open till the filing of this story.
About 270 million cubic metre (mcm) water is stored in Kolar Dam at full tank level. Of this, Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) uses 56-mcm of water for supply to Bhopal. The Water Resource Department (WRD) supply about 130-150 mcm for irrigational purpose.
Thus, there is additional water of about 70 mcm at Kolar Dam even after fulfilling these requirements. In the years after its construction, this dam could store an average of 150-mcm of water per year.

{{/usCountry}}At Kolar Dam, the water level was recorded at 461.30 metre at 8 pm and it started increasing afterwards. At 5.45 pm, the water level crossed the 462 mark. After the release of water from Kolar, the water reaches the Narmada River through Ratapani Sanctuary. Kolar river joins Narmada River at Nilkanth.
The Water Resource Department also opened 12 out of 13 sluice gates of Kaliasot Dam, which is constructed in the downstream of Upper Lake. The full tank level of Kaliasot Dam is 505.67 meters. The water released from Kaliasot reached Betwa River through Mandideep.
The sluice gates of Kaliasot are opened after the release of water from Bhadbhada Dam, the outlet of Upper Lake. Increasing inflow from Kolans river to Upper Lake has forced Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) to open all 11 sluice gates of Bhadbhada at 7 pm. Earlier, two gates were opened at 2 am, which was increased to 10 gates at 2.15 pm.
The sluice gates of Kerwa Dam were also opened following rains. At Kerwa, six out of eight gates were opened today after water exceeded the full tank level of 509.93 meters. Apart from these dams, water was also released from the waste weir of two other dams – Hathaikheda and Halali as gates are not installed here.
