A day after seven people were charred to death in a fire mishap in Howrah-Dehradum Express, the Koraput-Howrah Samaleswari Express on Wednesday had a miraculous escape from a side collusion with a goods train.
The accident occured at about 2am near the Jharsuguda railway station, about 370 km northwest of Bhubaneswar, left one person injured and two AC 3-tier coaches damaged.
The train resumed its journey to Howrah five hours later. A railway official said a major accident was averted as both the trains were running at a low speed of just 5 kmph. The accident occurred after the express train, which was standing on the platform, started moving though the signal was given to the incoming goods train causing side collusion.
A South Eastern Railway press note said: “Prima facie, it has been revealed that the driver of the Koraput-Howrah Express violated the starter signal at Jharsuguda station resulting in side collusion with a goods train which had started from an adjacent line.”
The railways have directed the commissioner of railway safety, South Eastern Circle, to conduct an enquiry into the accident. On Tuesday, seven persons, including a foreigner, died after two air-conditioned coaches of the Howrah-Dehradun Express caught fire in the Giridih district of Jharkhand.
