He was speaking at a function organised on his first visit to the university at North Hall of the Senate House on Monday.
“We look forward to building India as one of the strongest countries of the world in the next 20 years. However, the word strong does not define strength, in terms of military or economic advancement also, but also includes humanistic features.”
He said the vision of development should not be like those of developed countries who had indulged in activities to suppress and terrify underdeveloped and poor nations. He said the vision of development should include humanity, kindness and supporting development of poor countries.
Earlier, the Chancellor was given a guard of honour by the NCC cadets. The function began with Saraswati Vandana and Kulgeet by students.
In his welcome speech, AU vice-chancellor Prof RG Harshe called for collective and consistent efforts towards the building of the varsity.
He said students should focus on studies and teachers must ensure that the students were taught properly.
Prof Harshe said teachers should lay stress on use of modern tools like computers. He insisted on developing a good work culture and said there was no place for hoodlums in academic institutions.
He also said Dr Kurien was a great visionary who worked with innovative ideas.He said that Kurien had set an example through his white revolution for generations to follow.
Kurien felicitated head of the Psychology Department Prof Janak Pandey and head of the Arabic and Persian Department Prof AQ Jafri.
Prof Janak Pandey was made a honorary fellow and felicitated by the International Association of Cross-Cultural Psychology at the 18th International Congress of the Association held at Greece in July 2006. Prof Pandey also served as the president of the body from 1994 to 1996.
Prof AQ Jafri was awarded the ‘Certificate of Honour in Persian’ by the President APJ Abdul Kalam at Rashtrapati Bhawan on December 25.
Prof VC Pandey conducted the proceedings of the function, which concluded with the recital of the National Anthem.
Later, the Chancellor gave the students his innovative ideas and suggestions during an interactive session.
A large number of distinguished personalities, including former vice-chancellors of Allahabad University, members of the executive council, teachers, employees and students were present on the occasion.
