ALTHOUGH THE Health Department has invited 2,500 unemployed youths to appear in an interview for training of Laboratory Assistant (Rural), the selected youths, after completing the training, may not get jobs.
The interview will start from March 20 and continue up to May 2. Six hundred selected candidates will be imparted six months' training, but the fate of the candidates, as far as job is concerned, will remain uncertain. Getting a job in the Health Department or in private clinics, after completion of the training, will be an arduous task for them.
ecretary, UP Medical Faculty, in a letter to Director-General (Medical Health), has stated that registration of the Laboratory Assistant was not possible in the Medical Faculty. Only after registration with the Medical Faculty, the trained Laboratory Assistant will be appointed as para-medical staff in the Health Department or in private nursing homes.
A Government Order issued by the then principal secretary medical health in 2002, clearly states that after training, the candidates will not be eligible for job in the State Government. Another Health Department official said that the Director, Planning and Budget had informed them that no post of the laboratory assistant was vacant in various hospitals.
A senior Health Department officer said selection of laboratory assistant for six months training was useless. There was no utility of this post as the Health Department was appointing Laboratory Technicians with 18 months training at the new Primary Health Centres, he added.

After 1990, no selection for the training of Laboratory Assistant was being done and no fund was been allocated for the training programme.
The Health Department created a mess in the selection procedure and it was evident from the fact that way back in December 1999, it invited applications for six months training of Laboratory Assistant (Rural).
Owing to anomalies, the result of the test held on April 4, 2002 was stayed by the court. Again, the Medical Health Department issued fresh advertisement for training in October 2002.
After several hiccups, finally the test was held and results were declared in 2005.
When asked, officials of the Health Department said the interview was being conducted on the High Court directive.
