Labour colony residents in trouble again

RESIDENTS OF the Labour Colony quarters are again in trouble. The State Labour Department has issued notices to these residents for paying the enhanced rent and also the damage charges per month. The department has acceded to the request of selling out the ownership rights to the occupants of those quarters.

RESIDENTS OF the Labour Colony quarters are again in trouble. The State Labour Department has issued notices to these residents for paying the enhanced rent and also the damage charges per month. The department has acceded to the request of selling out the ownership rights to the occupants of those quarters.

About 50 years ago, the Labour Department had constructed about 18,015 labour quarters in the city for various mill employees. Gradually, the mills closed and the actual worker-tenants left for their respective villages sub-letting the quarters to those who were not working in any mills. However, in the beginning, the labour department had neither taken any notice of the cases related to sub-letting nor had they refused to accept the rent from the sub-tenants.

As the issue became very complex, the Central Government had advised the State to transfer the ownership rights to the actual occupants on the pattern followed by the Delhi and Orissa governments. However, the State Government did not initiate any action in the matter and the dispute over ownership issue continued.
