The functioning of several district courts in Uttar Pradesh continued to be affected on Thursday as the lawyers struck work for the fourth day.

Lawyers Pradip Dixit and Mukul Tewari were shot dead on Saturday allegedly by a group of Lekhpals or revenue officials during a clash in Lakhimpur Kheri.

Agitated over the killings, lawyers in Lakhimpur and Gola had gone on a rampage damaging around 12 government vehicles and ransacking the office of the District Magistrate.

The lawyers alleged that the Lekhpals resorted to unprovoked firing which left two of their colleagues dead and four others injured.

The lawyers have demanded a CBI inquiry into the incident.

"We have extended our strike till September 12 following yesterday's terror attack in Delhi. Initially, we were only protesting the killing of the lawyers but now we also want enhanced security measures in the district courts," Kanpur Bar Association President Ajit Shukla said.

Meanwhile, lawyers at several places including Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, Ghaziabad, Bulandshahr, Baghpat, Bijnore, Moradabad and Kanpur stayed away from work in response to a strike call by UP Bar Council.
