Observing that development projects in Maoist-hit Lalgarh were being hampered due to the law and order situation in the area, West Bengal government on Thursday said it will seek more Central forces to bring stability in the trouble-torn region.
"If the Centre provides more forces we will try to restore law and order in the area as soon as possible," West Bengal chief secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty told reporters in Midnapore.
Chakraborty said the unstable law and order situation in Maoist-hit tribal Lalgarh, where operations are on by joint forces, was coming in the way of implementation of infrastructure development projects.
"Unless secure stable conditions prevail we cannot implement the development projects which have been ordered by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee," he said.
Chakraborty, home secretary Ardhendu Sen and Director General of Police Bhupinder Singh were at Midnapore during the day to review Maoist activities in West Midnapore district.
Sankrail police station officer-in-charge Atindranath Dutta was abducted and two policemen were killed by the Maoists on October 20. Dutta was released on October 22.
During the day, two drivers of Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani Express drivers were kidnapped by the cadres of Peoples Committee against Police Atrocities, which is believed to have Maoist links. Its leader Chatradhar Mahato has been booked under UAPA.
