During the three-day visit, he will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and apprise him of the latest situation in his country and efforts being made to usher in peace, sources told in New Delhi on Saturday.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee is also likely to meet Rajapakse.

The two sides are also expected to explore ways to further enhance their bilateral relations in various fields, particularly trade and investment.

The Sri Lankan President is visiting India primarily for an international conference of mayors in Dehradun, they said.

With the Norway-brokered peace process making little headway, Rajapakse has been pressing India to play a more active role to help end the decades-old bloody conflict in his country.

India has offered to help Sri Lanka politically resolve the ethnic conflict. In this direction, India has proposed its model of Constitution and devolution of powers that could be replicated in Sri Lanka to resolve the issue.
