Sri Lankan forces were being massed in the Kajuwatte area to attack the strategic coastal town of Vaharai in Batticaloa district, the LTTE's military spokesman Rasaiah Ilanthirayan alias Marshall said on Monday.

He told Hindustan Times over phone from Kilinochchi, that the Sri Lankan army had been firing artillery and mortars from the Valachenai Paper Mills camp, Karadikulam and Mankerni camps intermittently since Monday morning.

The shells had destroyed houses in four villages in the Vaharai area. Kfir jets of the SLAF had bombed two villages.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in the Vaharai area was worsening with food stocks running low, Marshall said.

The forces have imposed an economic embargo on Vaharai by blocking all roads to it to prevent people and goods from moving.

The government had banned the international NGOs from working in the Vaharai area, though it is home to thousands of refugees including 20,000 from Sampur in Trincomalee district.
