MORE THAN 50 lawyers staged a demonstration when a septuagenarian lawyer died of cardiac arrest after a group of lawyers that included the deceased had an altercation with SDM Vivek Shrotriya at the Collectorate’s facilitation centre on Saturday afternoon.
District Collector Vivek Aggarwal will conduct magisterial inquiry into the incident and submit report within 30 days. He has invited statements of complainants about the incident by February 7. Aggarwal has assured lawyers that continuation of Shrotriya on SDM post would not affect the inquiry.
Collectorate lawyers have alleged that the deceased, S R Navaal, suffered heart attack due to an alleged scuffle and altercation with SDM. They struck work after the incident and called their colleagues from district court to support their protest. Chanting slogans, they demanded that FIR be registered against Shrotriya, as he was responsible for Navaal’s death.
They entered into altercation with ADM Rameshwar Gupta over the issue while insisting that Shrotriya pushed Navaal and other lawyers. Later, lawyers led by Indore District Bar Association secretary Arvind Yadav submitted a memorandum to District Collector and held a meeting with him.
In the meeting, they demanded that the Collector conduct the magisterial inquiry into the incident, and Aggarwal agreed. They complained that staff members at the facilitation centre taunt them as middlemen while objecting to their role in getting marriages registered. They also demanded allocation of space for construction of bar room at the Collectorate.
