AT A time when an ongoing departmental probe is yet to establish the exact number of vacant flats in Nehru Enclave, the LDA’s decision to open bookings for the scheme on Thursday makes little sense.
The development agency first invited registrations under the scheme in July. The exercise, however, was called off on July 26 for inexplicable reasons. Once again, the department put out a public notice on August 2 stating that flats in the scheme (65 to be precise) were available for sale on a first-come-first-served basis.
The notice was withdrawn again due to certain unavoidable reasons on August 5. This time round, the only difference in the registration booklet is that the number of flats has gone up from 65 previously to 107.
Pray, how did the officials arrive at the figure when a probe to ascertain the actual flats available for allotment in the colony is still on. Moreover, what was the purpose of instituting an inquiry in the first place, if the officials were certain that the information they had on the issue was correct? But then the shady goings-on vis-à-vis the allotment of flats in the colony have never made any sense, thanks to the devil-may-care attitude of the civic agency’s bosses.
Not surprising, therefore, the latest move by the development agency, is being viewed as an attempt to dispose of the flats at the earliest lest more skeletons tumble out in the ongoing probe. The 107 vacant flats in the scheme include 23 in the Rupayan block, 24 under Vatayan category, 39 in Pushpayan section and 2 and 19 in the Premayan wing of the scheme respectively.

“I myself am confused because the details of the scheme provided by the property section contain a far greater number of vacant properties,” said an official on condition of anonymity. The property section officials, on the other hand, maintain that the information available on their registers do not tally with the computerized data as the latter has not been updated.
