Left or no Left, the nuclear deal benefits India

The Leftists are opposing the N-deal because they want to make their presence felt. Otherwise, what is wrong if we get civilian nuclear support for power generation?

Apropos Vir Sanghvi's article What is the Communist manifesto? (Counterpoint, August 19), many experts, journalists, the national security advisor and our PM have assured us this is the best deal we could get. Should we doubt their credibility and patriotism? The Leftists just want to make their presence felt. Otherwise, what is wrong if we get civilian nuclear support for power generation?

Vir Sanghvi reflects the view of today’s elite. They put the sovereignty of the nation next to their own interest. On the nuclear issue, Indian communists should continue to support the UPA government only if it does not hurt our sovereignty. I believe the government undertook this decision to secure the middle class and upper class vote banks.

The Leftist allies have always demanded their pound of flesh in every decision and initiative of the UPA government. The best course for the PM would be to stick to his guns and let the Left pull the plug if it so desires. If the stubborn attitude of the Communists leads to general elections, so be it. The Chinese and Pakistanis are already gloating over the possibility of the Indo-US deal coming unstuck.
