Addressing an election rally in the port city of Kochi, the PM said his government has taken sincere and effective steps to check corruption and many were forced to demit their office.

"I served the country for almost four decades in different capacities. My only concern was my country and its people," said Singh, referring to repeated opposition barbs on his ability to lead the nation.

He claimed the UPA government had succeeded in taking many steps on economic and social fronts and some of its bold decisions had helped the country withstand two major slowdowns. "Our fundamentals are strong. That is how we withstood two global crises," he said. He, however, admitted that not much could be done in certain areas.
