The Left parties were going to play a crucial role in the formation of government at the Centre after the Lok Sabha elections going by indications after the first two phases of polls, CPI-M General Secretary Harkishen Singh Surjeet said no Wednesday.

"No government can be formed at the Centre without the support of the Left," Surjeet said addressing a campaign meeting of the LDF here.
Surjeet alleged that the Congress had always been vacillating on the issue of protecting secularism. "They have never tried to counter the BJP, but are now jumping into the scene in the face of the exit poll results," he said.
He said unity of the country could be maintained only on the concept of secularism which the BJP was trying to destroy with their 'Hindutva' plank. "Secularism means religion and politics have to be separate," he said.
The difference between BJP and other parties was that the former promoted Hindutva ideology, which was against the basic tenets of Indian secularism.
Surjeet wanted the electorate in Kerala to 'play their cards' as it was by now clear that the people had decided to oust the BJP from power. They had called for the elections with the hope that Congress was on a low level after the defeat in three state elections, he said.
