The Left parties, whose ten MPs including Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee face disqualification petitions and strongly favour an amendment on offices of profit issue, on Thursday toughened their stand saying Parliament should pass the legislation and send it to President APJ Abdul Kalam.
"We would like to Parliament to adopt the legislation and send it to the President as per the Constitutional provisions", CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said, implying Kalam would have no option but to approve the bill in that case.
Karat's remarks came in reply repeated questions on the Left position in the wake of Kalam returning the Parliament (Prevention of Disqualification) Amendment Bill, 2006, for reconsideration.
CPI leader AB Bardhan, however, sought to dismiss the objections raised by Kalam on the issue of uniformity in the legislation, contending that states had their own definitions and lists of offices of profit.
