The All India Democratic Women’s Association, Jan Swasthya Abhiyaan, Healthwatch and SAMA have made this demand in a memorandum sent to Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dr A Ramadoss.

The organisations will jointly hold demonstrations against sex determination and abortions in Agra on May 23. Social activists Subhashini Ali and Joe Varghese will take part in the rally.

They have demanded that States not following the directives of the Union Health Ministry the matter should be transferred to the Supreme Court.

Talking on the status of sex determination and female foeticide in the country, the activists said the social evil continued despite the existing Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PNDT).

“Almost everywhere in India sex selection is being aggressively promoted by unethical doctors. Sex determination and selective abortions are a business worth Rs 500 crore per year for medical professionals,” said Yashodhara.

She said in the coming years, India would overtake China in selective abortions.
