A local court has awarded life imprisonment to a cab driver for killing a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) by poisoning him in 2004.
A citizen of Sweden, Inderjit Parmar, had hired a taxi for Hoshiarpur from the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on January 23, 2004.
Taxi driver, Joginder Singh, a resident of Jalandhar, however, gave him some biscuits laced with some poisonous substance on way to Hoshiarpur. Inderjit fell unconscious as a result near Butana village in Karnal district and subsequently died.
Joginder then mutilated and dumped his body at roadside on the National Highway-1 near Butana village and decamped with his cash, mobile phone and other valuables.
Later, Inderjit's body was identified with the help of his passport and his kith and kin in Hoshiarpur were informed about the death by the Haryana police. A case under Sections 302, 201 and 404 IPC was registered at Butana police station.
Joginder was nabbed by the police who were tracing Inderjit's mobile being used by him.
Besides, awarding him life term under Section 302, Sessions Judge P L Ahuja sentenced him for three-year imprisonment under Section 201 IPC and one-year jail under 404 IPC.
