It made both their families sign documents to this effect and also handed over a copy to the police, officials said.

Niwari Station Officer (SO) K.K. Rana told HT that the girl’s family members reached Niwari police station on Sunday and wanted to book a neighbourhood boy on charges of rape after their daughter was found to be pregnant.

“Both the boy and the girl belonged to a specific community and seemed to have a love-affair. Family members of the duo had an altercation over the matter after the girl was found to be pregnant. But the community Panchayat made the families reach an agreement to get them married,” Rana said.
