Look who’s a designer now...

I totally pooh-pooh the idea that Kate Moss’s move into a fashion brand —Topshop — was born out of a love of stitching as opposed to, a panicky desire for some guaranteed publicity now that she is moving north of her 37th year. Yet the number of celebrities who have made this transition from acting, modeling or whatever into fashion design suggests there must be some natural kind of connection, and it’s a connection that I reckon goes a little bit like this... “Ooh, I do like to wear clothes! And if I wear clothes, I bet I could design them! Because, like, I’m really creative and I’ve always loved fashion.”

When Lindsay Lohan made her debut as designer at the New York Fashion Week, she was lambasted by most serious fashion writers.

However back home, when Karan Johar made his debut as a designer at the Couture Week, the media raved and ranted. I guess they got carried away by the aura of KJo and the Bollywood stars who walked the ramp. I doubt anybody paid attention to the clothes. I am not saying that the collection was bad, but I definitely did not find any couture element. They were rather very ready-to-wear.

Once upon a time, fashion was considered a skill that one had to learn. It may not be nuclear physics, but it does still have elements that one needs to be taught. The designers worldwide have been tightlipped about whether they feel a little annoyed that collections by the Olsen twins or Lindsay Lohan are treated with the same reverence by fashion writers. I am not surprised about their stoic silence because these designers know better than to bite the hands that feed them.
