He made his Olympic debut in 1996 Atlanta Olympics but after failing to get past the quarter-finals he returned to the international scene in 2001. He was the first Cuban in 20 years to lose to an American at the Olympics. But on his comeback he won two consecutive Welterweight World Championships.

He being vouched as the only individual who can prevent Oleg Saitov from winning three consecutive gold medals at the Olympics. He won the 2001 world title, defeating American Anthony Thompson for gold. In 2003, he repeated his feat, beating Uzbekistan's Sherzod Husanov in the final.
