SECURITY HAS been beefed up on Loreto Convent (LC) campus following vandalism by Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha activists on Sunday.

About 15 Catholic institutes remained closed in protest. Secretary of Association of Catholic Educational Institutions in UP Father Paul Rodrigues claimed that around 25 institutes had remained closed. However, a few prominent institutions, like La Martiniere Boys’, remained open. A handful of former LC students were seen standing outside the college in support. But, they didn’t form a human chain as had been announced earlier. They claimed that a similar prayer service was also carried out at St Agnes’.

Meanwhile, students of Lucknow Christian College (LCC) burnt effigies of BJP leaders in protest against the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM’s) hooliganism on LC campus. LCC teachers also held a meeting to condemn the incident in general and the LC Chapel in particular. They said the attack on the Church would not be tolerated. LCC Principal BP Masih said all Christian College classes would remain suspended on Tuesday to register protest against the incident. A Christian community meeting has been convened at LCC on Tuesday to chalk out a strategy.

However, away from the rhetoric, the students acted maturely by deciding to call off their protest march that was scheduled for Monday morning.

“That is because we have our exams and the college authorities have advised us to focus on our studies,” said Anam Zaidi, LC head girl.
