Briefing about the surgery, Dr Anil Khanna, director of the Ajanta Hospital, said the surgery was a technical tool in the hands of surgeons for the patients suffering  from with obesity and all other measures have failed to reduce their weight.

“There are two types of procedures followed in this surgery. In the first method, the food intake of a patient is reduced by reducing the stomach size. And in the second method, the extraction of energy from the consumed food is reduced. In some cases both the techniques are used for better results,” said Dr Khanna.

It’s a surgery that has maximum and permanent functional implications even for those morbidly obese and weigh over 100 pounds. The surgery is followed by body contouring, said Dr Geeta Khanna.

The bariatric surgery, which is being used by surgeons in a few places in the country, would be first performed by Dr Ashish Vashishtha of Max Hospital.Coordinator of the obesity, exercise and diet programme at the hospital, Dr Reeva said the patients were first put to exercise sessions and a balanced diet.

If all this fails to make an impact, the surgery is resorted to as a permanent solution. The reduction of stomach is a scientific process where rings are put on the intestine to reduce diet of energy intake and at times the length of intestine is reduced to check flow of body juices in food, said Dr Anil.

The hospital is conducting a daylong ‘Obesity and Bariatric Surgery’ camp on Sunday.
