The judgment had been delivered and a star-crossed couple reunited when a menacing voice rang out in the courtroom. “Maar doonga dono ko. Apna kafan taiyar karke rakho (I will kill you both),” roared Shiv Charan, the angry father of the bride.

The story is as old as one can care to remember. Satish Kumar and Preeti, both call centre executives — from different castes — fell in love and tied the knot at an Arya Samaj Mandir against the wishes of her parents on December 4, 2006.

Preeti’s father Shiv Charan took her home pretending to have accepted the match. However, he then refused to allow his daughter to meet Satish. The groom moved court against “illegal detention”.

A Division Bench of the Delhi High Court directed Shiv Charan to produce Preeti in the court.

Despite many protests from Shiv Charan, the court allowed Preeti to go with Satish after she told the court that she was madly in love with him and married him of her own accord. The bench also observed that the two were adults and mature enough to take such a decision.
