Elections to the Lok Sabha and to the state assemblies should be held together to check decreasing voter turnout, Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat said in Jaipur on Tuesday.

"A parallel election schedule would also curb violence and corruption generally witnessed on the eve of polling," he told reporters in Jaipur.

"The concept is not new, this was the practice adopted way back in 1952, 57, 62 and 67 general elections, he said adding elections held at different timings resulted in a fall in polling percentage.

Noting that there were incidents when polling as low as 26 per cent has decided and formed state governments, he said "it is very important to strengthen democracy through a one-time poll, both for Parliament and state assemblies."
