No police check, no affidavit

POLICE VERIFICATION of candidates seeking admission to Lucknow University (LU) proved to be much ado about nothing. The varsity administration has nearly rolled back its decision of making police verification compulsory. Candidates are now not expected even to give an affidavit and may seek admission by giving a simple five-point declaration that neither any criminal cases pending were against him nor he was punished by any court of law.
The candidate is expected to declare that no FIR has been registered against him in any police station and would maintain a good conduct during his stay at LU. Finally, he would have to state that if any of the above mentioned information given by him proved incorrect, LU was authorised to take action against him and he would not object to it. The declaration is to be addressed to LU registrar.
Admissions took place on the first day and B Com first year counseling got underway at LU from Monday. Pro V-C RS Yadav clarified that they had not waived off the varsity’s decision of police verification completely. “Instead, we have just simplified the procedure for candidates who were facing great problem in getting police verification or preparing an affidavit,” he said.
Has LU done away with police verification under pressure? Yadav said: “We have not succumbed to any pressure and the decision to simplify the procedure was taken to save students from needless running around. Since getting an affidavit would cost students around Rs 40, it was decided to do away with the stipulation,” said Pro V-C while talking to this newspaper.

{{/usCountry}}LU administration came in for sharp criticism ever since LU V-C RP Singh declared that candidates seeking admission would have to give necessary police verification. He felt this was the best way to keep the criminal antecedent students away from taking admission. But following criticism, LU exempted girl students completely and made it mandatory for boys only.
