Elections as per Lyngdoh panel recommendations
FINALLY, THE STUDENTS’ union elections of Lucknow University (LU) and associated colleges would be held on December 16. The election would be conducted as per the Lyngdoh committee report. The notification for the students’ union elections would be issued on December 4 and filing of the nominations held on December 11. A decision to this effect was taken at a joint meeting of district administration officials, LU officials and principals of the affiliated degree colleges held here in the State Capital on Thursday. DM Ramendra Tripathi said the HT students’ union elections would be conducted simultaneously at LU and other degree colleges on December 16.
Elections would be held at JNPG, BSNV, Vidyant Degree College, Lucknow Christian College, Shia PG College, Kali Charan and DAV. Islamia and Mumtaz colleges would not hold elections as the managements of both these colleges have decided not to hold elections following an HC ruling that let minority colleges not to hold elections. The final decision is still awaited for the two colleges.
The DM said: “We are committed to holding a free, fair and violence-free elections.” After SC interim order on Lyngdoh panel report and its reinforcement by Allahabad HC, there was no ambiguity on the issue of modalities of students’ union poll.
Proctor also highlighted the fact that teaching remained completely paralysed at LU campus for the last 10 days, which has caused immense harm to common students. At this the officials promised to provide all possible help on their end.
LU proctor also said recent vandalism resorted to by student leaders is a testimony that police is acting as a mute spectator at LU. While the meeting was under progress, student leaders of LU and degree colleges converged outside the meeting hall. No sooner they came to know that elections would be held as per Lyngdoh panel report, they turned pale and grim. They left the place in a huff. LU officials are apprehensive that they may again create ruckus but district administration and police assured of full cooperation.

Principals of degree colleges were baffled to see the behaviour of district administration officials when a representative of Islamia College refused to hold students’ union elections citing a specific HC ruling for minority institutions.
Instead of supporting the cause, the officials lost their cool and warned them of ‘non-cooperation’ in case student leaders resort to protest against the decision.
“How come you take such an arbitrary decision when there is government order for holding elections,” reportedly shouted an official. The HC in its ruling on elections on minority institutions has said that the district administration should refrain from interfering with affairs of the minority colleges, including the students’ union elections. Government order, which provides for students’ union elections, cannot be legally sustained in such institutions.
