CONGRESS LEADER and Mehar’s husband Luv Bhargava demands a CBI probe if assailants are not brought to book within a week, but the State government has virtually ruled out the possibility.
Principal secretary, Home, Alok Sinha told HT “the State’s investigating agencies are competent enough.” Interestingly, Luv Bhargava had earlier in the day said he had no faith in the State’s Crime Branch of the Criminal Investigating Department (CB-CID) and he would prefer nothing short of a CBI probe. Another senior official of the Home Department told HT “CBI track record was poor.”
What’s more sources in the Home Department disclosed that the “probe into Mehar’s murder” would cover all the aspects, including whether gangster KD Singh was given the flat number 301 at Dalippur Towers at Sapru Marg on rent by Mehar’s eldest son from her first marriage, Shiraz.
“The probe of course would look into all possible angles, including the fact whether the flat no 301 was used as a safe haven for criminals, whether the rent that was being paid was abnormally high etc” the source said. Shiraz’s in-laws owned flat 101 in the same building. Two criminals who apparently had come to meet KD Singh had misbehaved with Shiraz’s wife, Kavita.
They shot at Mehar when she objected to the obscene remarks passed by them. SSP Ashutosh Pandey had earlier in the day referred about the flat 301, where criminals, “moved freely” was given on rent to KD by Shiraz.
However, Shiraz while talking to HT admitted having known KD since longhe had given the flat on rent to a friend. “Are the cops hinting that I got my mother killed? My mother has been murdered. I do not know why someone is trying to sidetrack the issue. I don’t care who it is but I want the culprits behind bars,” he said. Those who know Shiraz point out that he is a “simple person” who easily trusts people. “You do not check the antecedents of the tenants all the time, do you? By making these statements obviously an attempt is being made to divert the real issue,” said Nimmi Dubey, Mehar’s sister-in-law. A close friend of the Bhargavas said the criminals who shot at Mehar had come to meet KD’s servant, Jai Prakash and not KD. “Police are trying to dilute the real issue by linking the tenancy thing with the murder.
What’s more if they were aware that criminals were using the flat, why didn’t they act earlier?” he asked. Significantly, the cops picked up KD Singh on Sunday evening. The sudden police action has made many wonder whether there was more to KD’s arrest than meets the eye.
