"We are concerned about the safety of doctors in the state. They need to be assured of safe environment to work. Hence, IMA along with across the state will be observing a day's strike on October 10," Dr Devendra Shirole, President of the IMA's state unit told reporters in Mumbai.

A mob had assaulted two doctors at a suburban clinic at Malad when a patient, who had undergone hysterectomy last year, complained that a towel was left in her abdomen after a surgery.

IMA, at national level, has been trying for two years to have an ordinance to protect the doctors on duty nation-wide from the wrath of patients' kin.

Six states in the country namely Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi have come up with this ordinance, Shirole said.

The Maharashtra chapter of IMA too has been consistently appealing to the government to come up with an ordinance which would be more stringent than that in Andhra Pradesh, as it was the first state to come up with it.

However, no definite steps have been taken so far and it is learnt that the issue is caught in red-tape, Shirole said.
