About 3,000 species of mosquitoes have been described across the world, divided into some 28 genera, some of which are:

Aedes aegypti: transmits yellow fever and dengue; identified by conspicuous white markings

Aedes albopictus: Asian tiger mosquito; native of Japan, thriving in southwestern and midwestern US and spreading to the Caribbean; potential carrier of serious diseases. Identified by black and white striped legs

Anopheline: About 400 species exist, of which 30-40 transmit four different species of parasites of the genus Plasmodium that causes malaria. Anopheles gambiae is one of the best known, because of its predominant role in the transmission of the most dangerous Plasmodium falciparum.

Culex pipiens: common house mosquito, indicator of pollution in the city.

Culex fatigans, Culex quinquefasciatus: widespread tropical mosquito that transmits filarial worms
