Madonna, the queen of pop, has her share of fans all over the world. But Madonna herself seems to be quite a fan of Delhi-born London-based fashion designer Ashish Gupta.
Remember the breathtaking purple sequined bomber jacket that she wore for her number Hung Up during her world tour? Well that was by Ashish. This Central St Martin’s graduate started by selling at Brown’s Focus in 2001.
Since then he has been featured in Vogue and the London Fashion Week with the prestigious Top Shop sponsorship in the Generation Next category. He also has his fans among the likes of Victoria Beckham, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Osbourne and Sharon Stone.
So how did he meet Madonna? “Her stylist called in a few pieces when they were shooting the Sorry video from her new album and that’s how Madonna saw my work,” he says.
Ashish has designed mainly jackets for Madonna but, according to him, she also kept a pair of sequined trousers that she liked. “She is wearing it for her current tour, Confessions on the Dance Floor,” he says.
At the moment the designer is getting ready for the upcoming London Fashion Week. “I will be showing at LFW as usual in September. But it is still early to say what I will be doing though,” he smiles.
