Taking a tough stand, the Asom Gana parishad (AGP) today expelled former Rajya Sabha MP Jayashree Goswami Mahanta, wife of former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, from the primary membership of the party soon after she filed nomination as an independent candidate for Dhubri Lok Sabha seat.

AGP spokesman Jagadish Bhuyan told PTI here that AGP President Brindabon Goswami expelled her from the party.
Bhuyan said the party also suspended the two AGP MLAs Ali Akbar Mian and Abdul Jabbar who defied party whip and were absent in just-concluded Rajya Sabha poll which resulted in the defeat of the party's nominee Birendra Prasad Baishya.
Bhuyan said the MLAs, beleived to be close to Prafulla Mahanta, were present in Dhubri when Jayashree filed her papers.
Prafulla Mahanta denied he had any hand in the abstaining of the two MLAs from voting despite the issuance of party whip.
