Two days after a fire gutted down over 250 shanties at Behrampada, killing three and affecting around 2,000 people, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has decided to redevelop the area on the lines of Dharavi.
“We have decided to make some temporary arrangements (see box) to solve the immediate problems. But as a long-term solution, we have decided to chalk out an SRA (Slum Rehabilitation Authority) scheme for the entire Behram-pada area,” said Chavan at a meeting at the collector’s office.
“It will be a sort of a cluster development on the lines of the Dharavi model,” he added. Chavan visited the affected site on Saturday.
“Our housing secretary will work the logistics out after an initial survey of the area and the population in Behrampa-da,” the CM added.
Behrampada, a slum partly on railway and on collectors land in Bandra (East), is spread across seven acres and roughly houses over 10,000 shanties. The BMC’s official figure from health posts stand at 7,557.
According to the SRA norms, legal occupants will be allotted a self-contained house of 225 sq ft carpet area free of cost. The cluster development will ensure that amenities like roads, electricity, ample water, playgrounds, schools, colleges, medical centers and socio-cultural centres are provided.
