With reference to the editorial Before the flood (August 7), floods have become a source of corruption. Why do VIPs undertake aerial surveys to assess the flood damage? In what way do they mitigate the suffering of the marooned multitudes? Instead of wasting public money, the helicopters could be used to drop essential items like food and medicines for the needy.

While distributing relief material, concrete steps are also required to tackle floods. An early agreement with Nepal is the need of the hour. Construction of dams in the flood-prone areas will not only check floods, but also provide irrigation and jobs.
