Malaysia to accept cheques in Tamil

The move follows complaints by some Indian businessmen that banks have rejected their cheques written in Tamil.

The Malaysian Central Bank has said that there is no restriction on writing cheques in Tamil.

Abdul Aziz Ahmad, a central bank manager, however, said that banks have the discretion on whether to accept these cheques, based on the availability of staff who can read the language.

The move follows complaints by some Indian businessmen that banks have rejected their cheques written in Tamil, according to the New Straits Times.

Indians constitute about 10 per cent of the country's population.

Tamils, Malayalees and Telugu-speaking people make up over 85 per cent of the people of Indian origin in the country.
