A 32-year-old businessman, who was allegedly tortured in police custody, has accused a police officer of demanding Rs 5 lakh bribe for setting him free.
Jitender Gupta, who was arrested last month under the Arms Act, was in police custody till August 11. Gupta told a district court that the station house officer (SHO) of DLF Phase-2 police station, Babu Lal, tortured him in custody and demanded Rs 5 lakh for his release.
"Gupta had nine injuries, among them two injuries are of cigarette burns. He did not have such injuries before he was sent to police remand," said Jitender’s lawyer, Durgesh Boken.
Gupta said the police hung him upside down and thrashed him. "They harassed my family and booked my brother in a fake case."
Gupta also alleged that the police were framing him in the case even though the complainant has withdrawn the case against him. "We have a property dispute and there are some people in Nathupur village who wanted to purchase our land. They have a nexus with the police," said Gupta.
The joint commissioner of police, Alok Mittal, said he was not aware of the matter and would get it investigated if it was reported to him.
The SHO has denied all allegations saying, "The accused is using pressure tactics to divert investigation."
