Marital dispute is reported to be the motive behind the attack.

The woman, staying separately from her husband, is a teacher with Crescent Montessori School in the same area.

The incident took place around 7.30 am when Nazreen (30) of Ghasiyari Mandi locality was heading towards her school on a rickshaw.

She had reached Bhanmati crossing when her husband Mohammad Meraj suddenly intercepted the rickshaw walking close to her.

Before Nazreen could have gauged the situation Meraj opened the bottle he was carrying and threw a liquid on her face.

The lady screamed in pain as it was an acid and it had caused burns on her face, chest and arms. Passers-by and the local residents chased Meraj who ran away from the scene.

She was rushed to the Balrampur Hospital. She suffered 30 per cent burns.

After being fed up with the torture, Nazreen lodged a case of dowry against her husband, his mother and the sister at the Mahila police station. Meraj was even sent to jail in the case.

Later, some senior members of the community had intervened into the matter and a compromise was managed between the couple.

Nazreen returned to Meraj in 2005. Meanwhile, Meraj received summon from the court regarding the dowry case pending against him.

Meraj forced Nazreen to withdraw the case but she refused and it led to another dispute between them. Nazreen was living at her father’s place for past three months.
