He was addressing the inaugural function of a two-day National Science Day programme at the Chemical Engineering and Technology Department of the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University.
The School of Biotechnology in the Science Faculty organised the programme to mark the discovery of ‘Raman Effect’ by the late Prof. CV Raman.Prof KP Singh, who is also a faculty member at the Banaras Hindu University Botany Department, said the temperature had increased by .6 degree Celsius due to global warming in the last 50 years.
Lack of awareness and population explosion were the main reasons for such problems, he said.
He also talked about deforestation, bio-diversity, the adverse effect of pesticides and global warming at length.
He asked students to extend support to conservation efforts and stressed the need for steps to check overexploitation of natural resources.
Earlier, Prof Ashok Kumar of the School of Biotechnology welcomed the guests.
Prof BD Singh introduced the theme of the programme. Institute of Technology director Prof SN Upadhyay and Science Faculty dean Prof P. Chandra also addressed the inaugural function. Prof Anil Kumar Tripathi proposed the vote of thanks.
Over 200 students of 13 city schools participated in the programme. Most of them displayed models and posters on the environment. A large number of posters and models suggested ways to avoid environmental problems.
