Middle-aged Pramod Barua owed fellow villager Dilprasad Gaur Rs 40. The former apparently had no intention of repaying the interest-free loan the latter had provided a couple of months back.

Last Wednesday night, Gaur (40) caught hold of the elusive Barua near his house at No 3 Borbeel village under Digboi police station in eastern Assam. Barua refused to pay up, denying he had taken the money from Gaur.

This led to a war of words. Barua, who was carrying a khukri, sprang on Gaur and stabbed him. He also attacked and injured Gaur's younger brother Rajesh, now undergoing treatment at the IOC hospital at Digboi.

"We arrested Barua the following day under Section 302," said an officer from Digboi police station, adding Gaur's murder would be further investigated into after Rajesh recovers.

If Gaur's murder were not sensation enough, 19-year-old Dukhu Majhi hacked his seven-year-old neighbour Mintu Majhi in the adjoining No 2 Borbeel village. Mintu apparently paid with his life for using abusive words against Dukhu's mother.
