This is exactly what happened to a senior railway engineer, Jaswant Singh, 52, who was allegedly shot dead by two unidentified robbers on a bike when he tried to resist a chain-snatching attempt in Kavi Nagar on Sunday.

The incident took place when Singh and his wife, Uma Singh, 50, were going to their Chiranjeev Vihar home around 6.30 pm. Police said, two young men on a bike had tailed the couple and snatched Uma Singh's gold chain near the New Ghaziabad railway station.

"I fell down during the snatching, but my husband followed them and managed to corner the bikers," said a shocked Uma Singh.

Police said Singh managed to overpower the robbers near Kavi Nagar B-Block area. Seeing no escape, the bikers allegedly fired four bullets, one of which hit Singh in the abdomen. The culprits then fled the spot.

"There were several bystanders but no one came forward because of the shooting. One person called the police and the victim was rushed to Sarvodaya Hospital, where he was declared dead," senior superintendent of police (SSP) Raghubir Lal said.
