It is a reserved constituency, from where only a Scheduled Tribe candidate can contest. The community-wise break up of Mandla is Scheduled Castes (6%), Scheduled Tribe (63%), Ahirs (8%) and others like Telis, Dhimars, Brahmins, and Rajputs around 3% each. Mehras (4%) among the Scheduled Castes and Gonds (51%) and Kols (5%) among the Scheduled Tribes are most dominant.

The winners since 1957 have been MG Uikey of the INC (1957, 1967, 1971), SL Dhurve of the BLD (1977), CL Uikey of the INCI (1980). In 1984, Mohanlal of the INC defeated SL Dhurve of the BJP and in 1989 he defeated Anoop Singh of the BJP. Again in 1991, Mohanlal defeated Ram Bhajan of the BJP.

In 1996 parliamentary elections, Faggan Singh of the BJP defeated Mohanlal of the INC and again in 1998 Faggan defeated Chhote Lal Jike of the INC. Again in the last parliamentary elections of 1999 Faggan Singh was re-elected from this constituency.
