Mangala Express engine derails; passengers safe

Passengers of New Delhi-bound Ernakulam-Hazrat Nizammudin Mangla Express had a providential escape from a major mishap after its driver applied emergency brakes as he noticed a big piece of iron on the track, railway sources said in Khandwa on Friday.

Passengers of New Delhi-bound Ernakulam-Hazrat Nizammudin Mangla Express had a providential escape from a major mishap after its driver applied emergency brakes as he noticed a big piece of iron on the track, railway sources said in Khandwa on Friday.

The driver applied the emergency brakes at 0930 pm yesterday between Nepanagar and Chandni railway stations, about 40 km from here, resulting in derailment of engine which disrupted rail traffic for over four hours on Central Railway's Bhusawal-Itarsi division, the sources said, adding that the passengers were safe.

Later at around 2 am, the passengers of the Mangla Express left for their destinations after the train was attached to another engine brought from Nepanagar Railway Station, they said.

Railway officials ruled out any mischief behind coming of a big piece of iron on the track.

Angry over the incident, passengers pelted stones at the train, but no one was injured in it, they said, adding that no case was registered in this regard.
