Manipur cops fire at protesters, 2 die

Two protesters were killed in police firing while three others sustained injuries when a demonstration turned violent in Manipur’s Ukhrul town, 84 km north of Imphal, on Saturday.

Two protesters were killed in police firing while three others sustained injuries when a demonstration turned violent in Manipur’s Ukhrul town, 84 km north of Imphal, on Saturday. According to reports, the protestors were demanding settlement of the Naga issue and the removal of prohibitory orders in Ukhrul.

In the skirmish, the demonstrators set two police vehicles on fire. The Ukhrul demonstrations was part of the rallies organized by the United Naga Council demanding an honourable and acceptable settlement of the Naga issue and the demilitarisation of Ukhrul.

The district magistrate had imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC to avoid untoward incidents after a member of the Ukhrul Autonomous District Council was gunned down by unidentified men.
