At a time when 40% of India is reeling under drought, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday exhorted people to start a mass campaign to conserve water, adding the prediction of good monsoon has brought in a message of joy and peace.
Modi, in the 19th edition of his Mann Ki Baat programme, also said on the education front, the focus has to shift from enrolments to quality education.
With large swathes of the country reeling under severe heat and drought conditions, the PM said a collective effort is required to conserve water in every village which in turn will recharge the ground water and wells.
“Today there is water crisis and drought in the country but we have about one-and-a-half months to plan for the good monsoon ahead. We can start a campaign now to conserve water in every village,” he said.
Giving examples of Hiware Bazar in Maharashtra, Modi said people of the panchayat have taken water conservation seriously by not only changing the cropping pattern, but also taking initiatives like drip irrigation, water harvesting and water recharging.
Modi also listed the government’s efforts in cleaning river Ganga and said cities such as Varanasi, Allahabad, Kanpur and Patna have been provided with trash skimmer to clear the solid waste that flows into the river every day.
