Maoist guerrillas have abducted a top official of Hindustan Aluminum Corp Ltd and reportedly demanded Rs5 million in ransom to free him.

Deputy general manager Yashwant Kumar was returning to Patna from Lohardagga district on Wednesday after meeting the deputy commissioner when eight armed Maoist rebels stopped his car and kidnapped him as well as his bodyguard.

The bodyguard who was released later informed Kumar's family about the abduction. The police said they had launched an operation to free the official.
