The extremists had killed three of the seven cops they had abducted eight days ago from a dense forest.

The killing and abduction comes a month after Maoists did the same with four policemen in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district less than a month ago.

Though the state police had launched a cautious search operation for the missing policemen, the Maoist hand in the crime emerged on Sunday. Handwritten posters were found nailed to trees near some villages in the district, giving the state 48 hours to meet the rebels’ demands or have the remaining cops killed, senior police officials told HT on condition of anonymity.

State Chief Minister Raman Singh told HT he was monitoring the situation.

“We’re open to a positive response. We’ve been trying our best to get the four policemen released. The rebels should not carry out any inhuman act and release the policemen on humanitarian grounds,” he said.
