A CPI (Maoist) press release, received by post, said it supported reservation for scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and OBCs in educational institutions as the party considered it as a democratic demand.

CPI (Maoist) Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee secretary Kosa and spokesman Gudsa Usendi appealed to students and other people to desist from acts of vandalism and join hands with democratic revolutionary forces to do away with the caste system in India.

They said the current flare-ups over reservation for the OBCs in educational institutions clearly demonstrated the upper casteist mindset among a section of students and their mentors.

The Maoist leaders, however, said they felt that Union Human Resources Development minister Arjun Singh and others have definite gameplan to make reservation an issue to outsmart other casteist leaders of electoral politics.

They said the CPI (Maoist) felt that reservation in services or educational institutions would resolve the problems born out of the caste-based society in India. Reservations can only serve the socio-economically and culturally deprived people to a very limited extent to have some parity with upper caste people. " There is a need for an anti-caste and anti-class mass movement in the country", they added.

"The CPI (M) has clearly stated that in west Bengal the situation being different and there was no question of reservation for OBC in educational institutions. This is the CPI (M) type of pro-upper caste position", the release alleged.
