Trescothick continues to grow in stature as an international batsman and is seen as favourite to succeed Nasser Hussain as skipper. He is a south paw opening bat who bowls useful medium fast. A hard hitter of the ball, he is adept at guiding the ball into the gaps.

Called into the squad as a replacement against West Indies and Zimbabwe two years ago, Trescothick did not waste the opportunity. He made a half century in his first appearance and has never looked back since then, establishing himself a first-choice opener in both Test and one-day versions.

Trescothick hit 137 against Pakistan during last year's NatWest Series and followed that with 121 off 109 balls against India in Calcutta during the winter.

The Somerset left-hander has passed 50 on 12 occasions in Tests so far, but has converted only two of them into centuries, including a 99 at Ahmedabad.
